The Department of Education and Science prepares and implements regional programmes in the field of education and science development, supports and carries out measures to enhance the level of education of the citizens of the Region. It cooperates with territorial self-government units and educational institutions in the field of education, coordinates the activities of teacher training centres regarding the establishment of priorities in the field of teacher training skills development on a regional level.

Other responsibilities of the Department include handling matters related to the establishment, transformation and closedown of schools and educational establishments for which the Region is the competent body, as well as dealing with organizational matters and supervision over the correct functioning of schools and educational establishments. Moreover, it supports professional trainings for teachers who are employed in schools and educational establishments, and organizes professional trainings for directors.

The Department of Education and Science also coordinates the operation of the Support Centres for Crafts, Dual Education and Vocational Education in Kalisz, Konin, Leszno, Piła and Poznań – units established by the Parliament of the Wielkopolska Region on 27 March 2017. The centres are the only institutions of this kind in Poland which are comparable with European Vocational Education Support Centres responsible for balancing the demand for occupations. They combine the economic and educational potential for vocational and dual education for the purposes of local labour markets, creating vocational and dual education as the positive choice education which allows following a career path based on the development of competences expected by the employers.

The Department of Education and Science handles matters related to granting scholarships for pupils and students, formulates the annual information on the implementation of educational tasks in schools and educational establishments which are subordinate to the Regional Self-Government, cooperates with NGOs in the field of education and science
